We’re really working hard to complete our summer bucket list. Mama feels it! However a summer road trip to get away for a few days ticks the right boxes.
This year we drove up to Umina. It’s a coastal town that’s about 2 hours from where we live. We’ve been there a couple of times now and each time it feels like were miles away from the crazy that is Sydney. We like to stay at NRMA ocean beach park. Great if you like to camp, have a caravan or are looking for a cabin to stay in. The park has 2 pools, jumping pillows, a splash park and a playground. Plus it’s right near the beach and they often have free stuff to keep the kids entertained. This trip they had a rainbow disco….best. thing. ever.
Another thing I really like about staying here are the social skills the kids develop. All the kids play together, they all have great manners and look out for each other.
We have a few tips to get us through road trips now-a-days.
- ipad/backseat movies
I like to snack so it makes sense the kids do too. We always take water and juice and will often have sandwiches or chips. Some easy fruit like banana’s or apples are also in the bag. Not only does it keep the kids happy, as they don’t start making a fuss because their hungry.
Music is an important part of keeping your sanity while driving with kids. You also need to find a happy balance between the stuff the kids like (Moana on repeat) and stuff that you like. A few good songs we all like are:
- Firework by Katy Perry (also known as the Madagascar song)
- Ghostbusters theme (original of course)
- Shower By Becky G
- and just about anything Disney
- One Direction (only a couple #teenybopperatheart)
I try to ensure that the songs I listen to in the car aren’t explicit, and even if some songs are I try and get the radio edit…annoying but kids are walking talking spongers people!
We have ipads for the kids and they are great. They keep them quite and lets be honest, are a great tool for ensuring good behavior lol. The kids are happy to watch something on their ipads in the car as we don’t have DVD players in the car. It also helps with quite time in the evenings.
And our top tip….2 hours maximum trip before stopping. Trust me on this one at 2 hours it’s like the witching hour but in a car! The kids need to get out and run away and you’ll need coffee or tea.
Last but not least, remember to have fun. We had great fun on our road trip up the coast. We danced in the car at traffic lights, put the windows down and felt the breeze on our faces and played the “spot your car color” game. Road trips are about getting out and about, seeing something new and meeting new people. Our latest trip was really good. Just what we needed after Christmas. Even though we were 2 hours away, it felt like we were in a different part of Australia. It was an awesome trip.
