Summer is just around the corner and with summer, often comes road trips. I love driving, just getting in the car and heading off on an adventure. Nowadays the distance of the trip does tend to be a bit shorter with the fact that my kids are in the car and 2 hours is their limit. Like right on that 2 hour mark, we need to be getting out of the car and they need to burn some energy. It’s insane! Sp to make driving fun we will play music and depending on the time of day, the music is loud! There is signing and dancing and lots of smiles. This normally makes the trip go quicker and the kids tend to be in a better mood when we arrive.
I was driving today, with the kids in the car thinking about songs. I’m not the biggest fan of the radio and will often have the ipod or spotify on around the house for back ground noise. When we do listen to the radio we will get a run of good driving songs come on in a row and it’s just the best feeling. We all sign (even if the kids don’t really know the words) there is dancing from the back and I’m laughing watching from the rear view mirror. So this got me thinking about what some of my favorite songs for driving are.
Here is a list…
Born to be Wild – Steppenwolf
More than a feeling – Boston
Sweet home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Hotel California – The Eagles
Boys of Summer – Don Henley
Here I go again – Whitesnake
Stairway to heaven – Led Zeppelin
Life is a highway – Tom Cochrane
Walking in Memphis – Marc Cohn
Graceland – Paul Simon
Don’t let this be our final song – Mo
Back from Cali – Slash feat. Myles Kennedy
Don’t stop believing – Journey
One way or another – Blondie
Singing in the shower – Becky G (admit it…you have danced in the car at least once to this song)
And some bands/artists to have on hand….
Guns n roses
Kings of Leon
The list could go on and on! The good thing about music is that each song can speak to you in different way. Each time you hear the song you may hear something different (or finally get that song lyric right!) it’s also the place that the music can take you that sets the tone for your drive. My husband is a huge Prince fan, like massive fan and will play the Purple Rain sound track in the car. Lilly know sings along and has a memory of her and her dad singing to he’s favorite songs.
Car trips can be stressful, but with the right type of music playing it can be a great experience and can build life long memories. Maybe on your next road trip you’ll listen to a few of these songs and understand my love of driving.
” Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road” – Jack Kerouac.
