Reading goal 1 completed! I completed reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It was nothing like what I expected. For some reason I really did think there would be more reference to mockingbirds. As the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover.
If you haven’t read the book it’s about a lawyer – Attics Finch who tries to defends an African American man accused of rape in the 1930’s. Set in the South, it tells the story of prejudice and injustice through the eyes of Scout. It also tells the story of Boo Radley who saves Scout and Jem (her brother) from being killed. The book is set over 3 years and covers Scout starting school and her aunt moving in, to teach her how to be a lady.
After I finished the book I read more about Harper Lee. The story is based off an event she witnessed in her childhood that was close to her home.
This book will make you think. He is innocent? Did he do it? Is she crazy and how can people make a judgment based on the color of someone’s skin.
I did find the book slow to get into and then it ends with you wanting more. By the time you get to the trial in the book you are hooked and interested to see what happenings and the decisions Scout makes.
It was well written and has humor. The book doesn’t feel dated. Which is a testament as the book was published in the 60s. I did find that I would take an hour out of my evening and read this book. It was my time lol. I feel like it’s a book you will either love or hate. There is really no in-between.
To kill a Mockingbird is a book that needs to be re-read a couple of years apart. I don’t think that you can finish it and then re-read it. Once you read it, watch the movie. All in all, it was a good adult read. I sometimes feel that the books I read boarder on teen fiction and sometimes that’s really OK, because there is often a lot going on in the world and our life that you need some light hearted reading to take you away from it all.
Have you read To Kill a Mockingbird? What did you think?
Next up: The Girl on the train (yep I’m late to the party!)
